Dwellings | A housing unit is a separate and independent place of abode intended for habitation by one household, or one not intended for habitation, but occupied for living purposes by a household at the time of the census. |
Households | A household is either a person living on his own and making his own provision for food and other essentials for living, or a group of two or more persons, whether related or not, who live together and make common provision for food and other essentials for living. Cases of persons having varying degrees of housekeeping have been considered as one household if there is any arrangement to share at least one meal a day. |
Collective dwellings | The term "collective quarters" is used to identify a group of foreign workers living together in one or more apartments, lodgings, temporary shelters, etc. Such quarters may have certain more or less common facilities, such as cooking and toilet installations, baths, dormitories, which are shared by the whole group. |

Special populations | Homeless refers to persons who do not have a shelter. They carry their few possessions with them, sleeping under shop verandahs, in doorways, in the streets or in any other space on a more or less random basis. |

Population universe | The 2000 Housing and Population Census will cover the whole of Mauritius, that is the Islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agalega and St. Brandon. The 2011 Population Census will include all people in the Republic of Mauritius on Census Night, with the exception of foreign diplomats and their families. Visitors to the Republic of Mauritius will be counted regardless of how long they have been in the country or how long they plan to stay. |

Questionnaire | The census was conducted in two rounds. First, a housing census was conducted using the household questionnaire. This housing questionnaire asked questions about housing conditions. The population questionnaire followed several months later that includes personal information such as age, sex, marital status as well as socio-economic topics such as educaiton, work, and disability status. |
Type of fieldwork | The census is conducted in two rounds. First, a housing census will be conducted followed by a population census. In the population census forms were dropped-off and pick up with review and completion of missing information by the enumerator. |

Dwellings | A building is any independent free-standing structure, comprising one or more rooms and other spaces, covered by a roof and usually enclosed within external walls or dividing walls which extend from the foundations to the roof. |
Households | The concept of household is based on the arrangements made by persons, individually or in groups, for providing themselves with food or other essentials for living. A household may be either (a) a one-person household, that is, a person who makes provision for his own food or other essentials for living without combining with any other person to form part of a multiperson household; or (b) a multiperson household, that is, a group of two or more persons living together who make common provision for food or other essentials for living. The persons in the group may pool their incomes and have a common budget to a greater or lesser extent; they may be related or unrelated persons or a combination of both. |
